A Book Review: My Heart Stopped Beating

chamed

This book starts out sweet. It tells how Chamed the person who wrote this book, overcame a childhood illness that left her unable to walk. Her father had faith that she would walk and she did. It tells us of her idyllic childhood with her parents. In that time she recived a lot of love and attention. Even if she was teased at school for being “slow” her father was always there to make sure she was loved.

Until the day her parents were killed in a car accident. Then her life changed to a living hell. It was in this part of the book I kept looking back at the front cover and seeing “A True Story”. I questioned myself how can a human endure so much? The stories about her aunt locking her in a closet and beating her and putting lime on her chest so they wont grow is just the beginning. Reading this made me wish I could reach through the pages and hug her.

She tries to commit suicide and ends up in the mental hospital. This should have been the beginning of her healing but unfortunately it was just another hell she was thrust into. Reading this made me angry for what all they did to her. Being raped and beaten was only the start of what they came up to do to her. I really felt that this girl endured more than one should have to endure in this lifetime. This book stirred up emotions of anger and disbelief and the question of why the courts did not do anything more to protect her. This all happened in Italy so it is probably different than what the process is in America but still! she should have not had to go through all that she did.

This book is short but not an easy read because of the emotions that it will stir up inside of you. If you are interested in child abuse or even issue books you will like this. Just be sure to have some tissue handy because you will cry at the end.

Disclaimer: I received this book for review for my own honest opinion.
