Why Morning Pages are so Important

This was originally published on my other blog but I combining them. I did not want my posts there to go to waste so I am transferring them all here.

Why are morning pages so important? #writing

Every morning at 5 am I drag my sorry ass to the Gym. And no, I am not one of those OMG IT IS TIME TO WORK OUT YAY! Kinda people. I really have to put effort into waling the 1 block to the gym and getting on the treadmill for my warm up. I am doing the BBG program and damn it is the first one to really let me lose weight. It is a hard program which is why I run for ten mins before doing it.

When Do I Write my Morning Pages

I get home and shower then as part of my morning routine I do Morning Pages. I use the Day one app to type out 750 words every morning. You may ask why I do this? Well, just as I wouldn’t, suddenly do 40 burpees without a warm-up I won’t do my clients work without warming up my brain. To be honest with you my first page of writing is pure crap. I mean it is not worth anything and my clients deserve my best cause they are paying to have a top Quality work written for them. I also don’t wont to put crap on this blog because people will be reading and deciding on if I am a good fit for their project. I always want to put my best foot forward so I put on my Brain.FM and type it all out until it starts to resemble the English language.

What ARE Morning pages exactly?

Morning pages was an idea that Julia Camron came up with to get past all the bad thoughts in your head so you can sit down and make the best piece of art possible. This includes painters and writers and anyone who does any kind of art. I have to admit when I first hear about this I was skeptical. Then I tried it out and it has really help me improve my writing skills. I now do it as part of my morning routine.

Sounds Good…But Why Would I Need to do This?

Another reason is to shut up the editor in my head. Editing is a completely different skill set than writing. In fact, I write Monday through Thursday and edit on Fridays. Ever since I started this, it has been a game changer. I can complete blog posts and clients work at a faster pace. Still every morning my inner editor sounds like crap. It feels me things like you write crap! You are a fake! You will never be a REAL writer! To get past all of that I type everything that comes into my head and just put it all downstream of conciseness style. By the end of the 750 words, my brain is quiet and I am ready for client work.

Why Do I Do All of This?

So I exercise to calm my anxiety and I warm up properly for that, and I write morning pages to get past the brutal editor in my head. I used to think that I was the only one who had these thoughts but after talking with other writers I found that we all have this problem. Just as you are not gonna run a number 7 on the treadmill without a proper 10 minute fast past walking warm up, you are not gonna churn out brilliance without doing a little writing beforehand.
