Book Review: Lean In

What I thought about it:

At first I was interested in reading this because she is a woman in Tech and that always interests me. I found out that this book is about how woman sabotage themselves in business and in other areas of life. Don’t get me wrong, this book is not preachy or anything. The author fully admits to making the same mistakes that she outlines in her book. As a freelancer I was thinking it wouldn’t have much to do with me but I found out that like many woman I am too nice when it comes to clients. This is a problem that a lot of woman face according to the author.

My favorite part is when she was negotiating her pay to work with Facebook and she was thinking that if she negotiated any more that she would not get the job. Her brother in law was telling her to ask for an increase in pay and she was scared to do it. Finally she got the courage and went for it and got her increase. It made me wonder, what I have been missing out on  by not asking and playing nice. We as woman are taught to not inconvenience anyone, but really the people with a lot of things got it by asking. If you don’t ask you will never get it. If you do the worst they can do is say no right?

This book made me think. It also pointed out how women are afraid to move up and advance because of starting a family ,or if single, from having a personal life. The author encourages employers to talk to woman about these topics and to encourage woman to not skip opportunities because of these factors.

I also loved the way she talked about finding a man who is all for an equal partnership. To find a man that is willing to help with child care and other stuff so the woman can climb to the top. This seems to be a topic few people are willing to touch on so I was glad the author brought it out in her book.

I LOVED this book. I think this should be required reading for every woman about to go into the business world. It brings up topics that are touchy but yet need to be addressed. I am hoping that this book is the first in a long line of books that tackle these thorny issues that need to be brought out in the open for women to have an equal chance at climbing to the top in whatever field she chooses.
